……………and action! If you’re looking to rent or buy a property in Fitzrovia you might need to get used to being neighbours with the film crews that regularly haunt the area.
Many films and TV series have been produced in Fitzrovia, and why not, for the area is a haven of diverse architecture and streetscapes. Netflix also rent an office in Fitzrovia, on Berners Street, where they have their European HQ. I imagine they have enjoyed the neighbourhood so much they decided to use it as a location spot. Starting with them; Damage, a forthcoming Netflix series, is an erotic thriller about obsession and desire and was filmed in Fitzrovia.
Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry also star in Our Man From Jersey, a new Netflix action film, which was filmed inside and outside of the Bay Leaf Café on Tottenham Street, Fitzrovia. Scenes from Our Man From Jersey have also been shot in Fitzroy Square – as observed by Daniel Castle from our commercial department who was carrying out a viewing at an office in Fitzroy Square at the time.
Let’s stick with Fitzroy Square, because it really is top of the A-List when it comes to Fitzrovia film locations. Here’s a quick list of the ones I know have been filmed here and I’m sure I’ve missed out a bunch;
Denial – The story of David Irving, the holocaust denier
The Phantom Thread – The genius that is Daniel Day Lewis’s stars in his final film as a tailor
Vanity Fair – The 2018 remake
Our Man From Jersey – An American Action Thriller
The Crown – A Netflix historical drama about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II
A Very British Scandal – A Prime Video series about the marriage of Margaret and Ian Campbell
Of course, Fitzroy Square also has a connection to Guy Ritchie, the legendary film producer who has a house and an office in the square, and just off the square on Conway Street is his highly recommended pub, The Lore of the Land. Apparently, the inside of the pub is featured in his film The Gentleman. Another great Guy Ritchie film (and highly underrated in my opinion – where’s the follow-up Guy?) is RocknRolla. In this film, the lawyers’ offices are actually a pretty Georgian building on Tottenham Street, Fitzrovia. Opposite the Bay Leaf Cafe used in Our Man From Jersey.
Going west up Tottenham Street, you can take a left onto the cobbles of Goodge Place. This was where the 2021 film Last Night in Soho was filmed. Fitzrovia is the new Soho apparently! Quite a few scenes from A Starter for Ten were filmed at UCL, which is at the east end of University Street. Strike, a detective series was also filmed all over Fitzrovia!
More recently an Amazon remake of Call My Agent, the binge-worthy show about a talent agency, was filmed in Fitzrovia with a particular focus on Rathbone Street. The office used in the TV series is just to the left of Rathbone Lofts, an amazing residential apartment scheme in a building we acquired on behalf of the developers. In case you’re interested in the remake, you can find it under the new name of Ten Percent. I wish I could get away with charging so much commission!
And finally, we can’t forget how the BBC once used the old LDG office on Foley Street as a backdrop for Spooks! I’m sure I’ll need to update this blog again as filming seems restless. The lesson from this must surely be, you might not be famous but if you want to buy or rent in Fitzrovia then there’s a good chance that your property might have had its 15 mins of fame!
Note to editor; a lot of our clients are famous 😉
